Thirty Years, Thirty Artists, Thirty Globes

Thirty artists were invited to transform a recycled globe they were given or to create one of their own. Each globe celebrates one of 1708 Gallery's thirty years of showing new art in Richmond.

The globes are part of a silent auction that began February 20 at 5:30pm and ends on February 28. INTERESTED COLLECTORS DO NOT HAVE TO BE PRESENT TO BID ON GLOBES OR OTHER ARTWORK PRESENTED IN SAVE PLANET ART. CONTACT 1708 Gallery @ 804.643.1708 FOR A BID NUMBER and to TO PLACE A BID VIA TELEPHONE.

Each globe has a reserve price of between $250. and $500. Gallery staff will give you the bidding status of the globe you are interested in. All bidding must be in 20 dollar increments. Please note: 100 percent of the proceeds of all globe sales will benefit the expenses of installing exhibitions, presenting programs and operating costs of 1708 Gallery. Amie Oliver

Amie Oliver, director of the "The Globe Project," has served on the 1708 Gallery board of directors since 1994.
When she first walked into 1708 it was located at 1708 E. Main. She was immediately
impressed by the quality of the artwork presented and the sense of community
apparent upon entering the space. "It seemed to be a place
that questioned 'what art can be' rather than a place that evolved around commerce."

Back in the late 80's or early 90's she convinced 52 artists to each
create a playing card for a deck that was auctioned off in what was probably the second or third 1708 auction. (She would love to know who
purchased that set of cards!) In the early 90's she convinced local artists as well as artists who had never heard of 1708 to each create a chess pieces for the creation of a unique chess board that was part of the annual auction. In 1999 and 2000 she begged artists across the state to participate in the first artist census in the state of Virginia. More than 800 artists exhibited in the resulting exhibition
"Art Count 2000." She is convinced that 1708 Gallery and the Richmond art community in general, are evidence
of the rich community that results when artists work together.

Tim Bowring

Tim Bowring is the creator and emcee for WRIR's "Zero Hour," weekly conversations about art, culture and society with local artists. Tim has performed as the emcee for numerous 1708 Auctions and has been a witness to 1708's evolution as the spouse of former 1708 Executive Director, artist board member and current Emeritus Member Sally Bowring. He is well versed in the survival of and directorship of non-profits and is currently the executive director of Habitat for Humanity in Hanover County.

Joe Seiple

Joe Seiple was a Founding Member and first President of 1708 Gallery in 1978
He is currently an Emeritus Board Member. His extensive exhibition history at 1708 includes 2003's “25 X25”,
“18621 Days”, a 1999 solo Installation, the “Founders’ Exhibition” in 1998 and numerous invitational group Exhibitions in Richmond, Milan, Italy, New York City, Washington, DC and Norfolk, VA including city wide projects such as “21 Billboards by 21 Artists” in Richmond. During 1995-96 he was appointed by Gov. Douglas Wilder to the Task Force for Promotion of the Arts in Virginia.Joe Seipel is currently Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Director of Graduate Studies atVirginia Commonwealth University.

Kathryn Henry-Choisser joined 1708 in December 1994. "I love the place and the mission and the people, so I'm still here. I've done a bit of everything for the organization. I've cleaned toilets, been the Executive Committee Secretary on and off for 5 years, helped paint a 1708 race car and was on the steering committee for Go Fish and InLight Richmond." Kathryn was the President of 1708 during 2000 - 2001. and "I've been on almost every committee out there." Chris Chase

Chris Chase served on the 1708 Gallery Board of Directors in the early 1990's. His sculpture was featured in the following 1708 exhibitions "More Than a Perfect World" in 2005 and a solo and group exhibitions in '95, '92 and 1991. He was awarded a graduate fellow of Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and a grant from the Pollack-Krasner Foundation grant in the 1990's.

Alyssa served as an artist board member of 1708 Gallery for two terms and is currently
an emeritus board member.

Bill Lupoletti, who lives in Providence Forge VA, hosts the world music radio program "Global A Go-Go" every Friday from 5 to 7 PM on 97.3 FM WRIR Richmond Independent Radio. Bill served on the board of directors of the Virginia Center For Public Press, WRIR's parent organization, for three years starting in 2004. In addition to his work in helping to launch WRIR, Bill participated in the creation Richmond's Channel 36/Color Radio in 1983, and he has done radio shows in Chicago and Philadelphia as well.

Alyssa Salomon recently was awarded her second VMFA Fellowship in photography and is a former 1708 Artist Board Member. Her artwork utilizes photographic and audio technologies to mine how we perceive, remember, and assign meaning. Alyssa is married to Bill Lupoletti and is host of "Can't Stop the Music" on WRIR 97.3 FM, Sundays 9 to 11 PM. "Can't Stop the Music" features overlooked, obscure and forgotten music, found sounds, and spoken word recordings to amuse its listeners through humor, silliness, satire and irony. Alyssa is actively involved in the operations of WRIR, currently serving as Interim Underwriting Manager and PSA Coordinator. She was an early dj on Richmond's Channel 36/Color Radio and on her college station WKCO in Ohio.

Julyen Norman was an artist member and Executive Director of 1708 East
Main/1708 Gallery from 1988 to 1994. He organized the first 1708 Auction,
which had a goal of raising $5000 to save the gallery from closure: that
first event realized over $15,000 and a tradition was born. With his wife of
25 years, dancer/choreographer Cathy Paine, he lives in the mountains of
western Maryland.

Carole Garmon initiated the the "Slide Slam" education and outreach program (which evolved into the Forum) and has been an exhibiting artist at 1708, since 1997. Noted exhibitions include the premiere Wearable Art, "Nude Descending the Runway," event at the James Center, "Domesticity-Nostalgia and Memory", 1997; curated by Saul Ostrow and "Dress Up," 2000; curated by Sally Bowring.

Carole Garmon is associate professor of sculpture at the University of Mary Washington, Fredericksburg, VA. She received her BFA and MFA from the Department of Sculpture in the School of the Arts at VCU, Richmond. Garmon has an extensive record, with her most recent exhibition being a two-person show at the Hunt Gallery at Mary Baldwin College. She has exhibited both nationally and internationally.

Kelly Gotschalk

"Once I got the initial idea and started working, I began thinking about the wider picture of connectivity in all its forms - person to person, group to group, country to country, etc., and all the different ways that we are connected and networked – biologically, environmentally, electronically, and financially, to name a few. The piece is very much influenced by the current climate of the world and is a direct reflection of my own anxiety and my hope. The tree, as presented, is in a state of winter, but it is from winter that spring always arrives."

Kelly Gotschalk served on the Board of Directos of 1708 Gallery for 2.5 years and left when she relocated to the west coast for a few years.
She was instrumental in the creation and production of the early years of 1708's Wearable Art. She has presented solo shows of her sculpture at ArtSpace, Virginia State University, Collegiate School and Astra Design. Kelly has a BFA in Sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University and an MA in Art History. She has worked for a number of years as an artist in residence in public schools throughout Virginia, a traveling artist with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and in more recent years as the Assistant Director of Development for the VCU School of Nursing.

Tom Chenoweth

Tom Chenoweth was a founding member of 1708 East Main gallery in 1978. He was the last founder
of that group to go emeritus in the mid 1990's. During his tenure at 1708 Tom served on the
facilities management committee, the exhibitions committee and curated several shows.
His sculpture was featured in solo exhibitions 1980, '85, '90, and '95.
Tom continues to support 1708 through special projects such as the creation of the
InLightmobile, an official Richmond Crown Victoria Police Car he
transformed to commemorate the inaugural InLight Richmond.

Sara Clark

Sara has been involved with 1708 Gallery for over 15 years. First as a graduate student intern, then as a Board Member, and now as an Emeritus Member. While on the Board, she was involved in a variety of committees and served on the annual auction committee, partcipated in Go Fish!, and was elected Secretary to the Board. She presented a body of work in her show "After Math" prior to her election to Emeritus status

Clark is a recipient of a Professional Fellowship Award for painting from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Sara maintains an active studio and is Affiliate Graduate Faculty at VCU and Faculty at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Studio School. Her most recent exhibitions include Contemporary Virginia Painters at Rawls Museum Arts and Mary Washington University; and, Peninsula Fine Arts Center Biennial 2008. Her works are in multiple public collections including Sheppard Pratt Health Systems, Capital One, and Markel Service, Inc.

"I was a 1708 artist member for 5 years in the late 80s (from 1986 - 1991) and on the executive committee for a couple of years. We were still in the Bottom and there was always a struggle with funding to stay open along with the mammoth efforts that went into keeping the gallery running day-to-day, including such things as cleaning out the gallery from the floods we used to have. It was also during the beginning of the AIDS epidemic and in 1989 Lauri Crow and I organized the community's first "Day without Art" event to recognize the many artists we were losing from AIDS (we took all of the art out of the gallery and instead showed a few panels from the AIDS quilt and - and just let people come by and write about their losses.) It was a sad time watching many of our young artist peers dwindle and die. But we showed some great art during that time - sometimes we were responding to the various political and social crises around us and sometimes we just wanted to show people things they'd never seen before just to enlighten and/or amuse them. "
